Metropol Parasol

The Metropol Parasol in Seville, Spain is finally complete just four years after it's inaugural plank was laid.  So breathtaking.  It's waffle like structure reminds me of a multilevel bird nest.  The world's largest bird nest that is.  The space is also multipurpose and will be used utilized as an:  archeological site, farmers market, elevated plaza, as well as host multiple bars and restaurants.  I anticipate a Spanish vacation in my future...

RIP LCD

Member's Only? Me and Joe in matching white members only jackets.
Arcade Fire joined James Murphy on stage to sing backup for "All My Friends"
White balloon explosion

NYC for LCD at MSG!  We had an absolute blast at the final LCD Soundsystem show at Madison Square Garden.  Joe's brother Jon, and his wife Ali, were excellent pre-gaming and dancing companions for the evening--so much so that we were all a little beer hazy and sore the following morning. LCD's set capped out at a solid four hours.  James Murphy filled every minute with his beat happy, booty shaking hits--it seemed not a single one was left unplayed, giving both the fans and the band members themselves a proper chance to say goodbye.  He closed the set with a beautiful ode to NYC, using cityscape and cloud images that LCD requested fans to submit a few days before the final show.  As the final note was played, the release of white balloons suspended from nets above the floor seats seemed to symbolize a reverse ascent as LCD passed on, into music history.  While they may cease to produce new music as a group, their records will have a place in all of our Itunes for years to come.

Farewell LCD

Joe, Jon, Ali and I were lucky enough to score tickets to the final LCD Soundsystem show at Madison Square Garden tomorrow night. This landmark occasion will be my first and last time seeing James Murphy and his dance punk co-horts. The band requested that everyone wear either all black, all white, or a mix of both. I'll be adorned in all white with neon pink fingernails---the pink being the only color you'll be able to spot in a blur of white dancing fury. Epic? I think so.

Tea time

{Bomb ass Kusmi Tea from Paris}

Whilst strolling the cobbled streets of Paris last September, I kept noticing the adorable store fronts of the Kusmi Tea stores.  After passing a few over a couple of days I finally decided to venture inside.  The rainbow colored spectrum of tea tins blew my mind and I took a few minutes to decide on my selection.  I walked out with a stack of five different flavors, one destined to become my die-hard favorite.

I am both a coffee and tea drinker, my mood dictating the winning libation of that particular moment.  So, it's fair to say that I don't have a "go-to" favorite flavor of either warm beverage and just haphazardly choose whatever sounds good.  Pomegranate Pizzaz, sure!  Breakfast Blend, alright!  I hadn't reached tea drinking nirvana until I took my first sip of the Kusmi St. Petersburg Green Tea.  The dazzlingly fragrant flavors of caramel and red fruits with a citrusy punch was intoxicating and I knew I was hooked!  And lucky me!  I just found a local store, Cooks Shop Here, that sells my happy addiction!

Take me away

(Photo by Irene Suchocki)
With the endless snow piling up around Northampton, it's easy to day dream of floating over Paris in a hot air balloon.  The red one is my favorite.

holiday lite

Homemade glitter xoxo's, a Trader Joe's wreath, and the most generic, cheapest stockings I could find.
Decorating for the holidays is easy when you will be out of town for 15 of the 31 days in December.  We wanted a tree but knew the cats would be living in it when we got home.  As the temperature outside finally seems to be dropping permanently for the next 4-5 months, I'm really looking forward to our trips to California, Florida, and abroad a cruise ship to the Bahamas.

I miss Paris

One month ago Joe and I were walking the streets of Paris arm in arm. A warming memory on a chilly late fall Monday in Massachusetts.

Honeymoon dreaming

This guest post featured on 100 layer cake aroused my excitement for my impending honeymoon next year. Finding a location is the first priority and once we've settled on that, I can start thinking of what to pack. How great are these selections?!

Macaroon Mayhem

Our recent trip to Paris delivered many delights. The most delightful being the airy, chewy yet crispy, taste bud titillating deliciousness of Laduree macaroons. If you ever want to feel like Marie Antoinette pick up an every flavor (sans licorice for me) box and share a few with your fiancee every night of your vacation. Delicieux!

Hidden treasure?

This table will be the host to our party weekend. Asshole, Kings, and Uno will be it's subjects. Tonight I depart for Fort Lauderdale. Tomorrow I arrive in Key West.
Pictures taken around this table over the weekend will depict a much more jovial scene and I can't wait to make some memories!

Dream tripping

The allure of stuffing a car with junk food, blankets, games, great music, a full tank of gas and heading east, making pit stops all over the country to pick of my best friends, with the final destination being Key West has been occupying my mind of late. Drunk and barefoot on the beach with the very women who define the person I am and will become...definitely not the worst day dream in the world.

The smoke monster really shouldn't have left the Iceland

Curtailed by a volcano cemented in a region with a name that no one on earth can pronounce. Seriously, Eyjafjallajokull, could you have picked a more INCONVENIENT time to express your feelings?
Joe and I were supposed to leave for Sweden yesterday afternoon-->we've rescheduled for tomorrow at 9pm. So far in the battle of Joe and Sarah vs. the Volcano, Volcano: 1, Joe and Sarah: 0.

Fika

In Sweden there is a daily tradition, if you will, of taking a break from one's activities, whether it be construction, applied physics, or say, writing a novel, to sip on a hot caffeinated beverage and munch on delicious pastries with your friends and/or family. This tradition, known as fika would be an easy transition for me.

Herring Meatballs

{Swedish meatballs}
{Belgian painter, James Ensor's painting of Skeletons fighting over pickled herring}

Sweden. Meatballs. Meatballs and herring. PICKLED Herring. Gorgeous, skyscraper tall women with white blond hair and blue eyes. These are just a few things that come to mind when I think of this Scandinavian country.
{Swedish Bikini Team...is there really such a thing?}
{Gothenburg}

My lover has an interview at Chalmers University, in Sweden's second largest city, Gothenburg. While the interview is on April 19th, we'll be leaving next week to explore the seaport city as a potential relocation destination.

OH wait. I can't forget Bork, the Swedish chef from the muppets.

Jet lag delivers hot flashes

On day three of my return from an exhausting albeit incredible trip to Rome and Berlin over Christmas and New Years and I'm still delirious with jet-lag and surprised by the occasional hot flashes it affords. With both of us being as busy as a two dollar hooker, the man and I truly indulged in some much needed quality time together and fell more in love than ever. In Rome we shared raucous laughter and smiles that made our faces ache over delicious meals of margarita pizza, caprese salads, cacio e pepe pasta, all accompanied by a sea of red wine and finished off with double scoops of gelato.

Even in the winter rain, the ancient city still expels its enchanting history as the ruins echo past civilizations and one can't help but feel romantic. However, the highlight of the trip was not a meal, a museum or an ornately decorated church but rather an experience we got to observe at dusk on the night we were departing to Berlin. While approaching the Tiber river to cross Ponte Giuseppe Mazzini to meet a cab back at our hotel, we noticed a group birds flying overhead. It took us a few moments to realize that this just wasn't a flock of birds flying by but rather a swarming, billowing, intertwining cloud of birds, performing an intricate dance right above our heads. In awe we stood for 20 minutes with our eyes gazing skywards, mouths agape in disbelief. When we finally realized the time, we had to rush back to our hotel but as we walked, jittery with excitement at what we just witnessed, we noticed another cloud of birds performing the same dance above another bridge in the distance.

I vowed to research this spectacle of wildlife when we returned to the states and found that the dancing birds were starlings and what they were doing was called a 'murmuration' and is a basic instinct for survival--safety in numbers. The murmuration occurs as the birds return from an afternoon of foraging and as their numbers continue to grow so does the cloud. No one bird wants to be the outsider, vulnerable to predators so each bird tries to fly as close as they can to their neighbor, copying changes in speed and direction and even the smallest deviation in one bird will be magnified by those around it and distort the formation of the entire cloud.

How lucky were we to experience such a phenomenon!!
